Joy Wakefield
Joy Wakefield is a lawyer with her own consulting firm, advising clients on strategic leadership, governance, and professional development. Joy was previously the Director of Human Rights and Equity for Lakehead University, handling complaints and training for 12,000 students, staff, and faculty.
Before that, Joy worked as a Bilingual Staff Lawyer for Legal Aid Ontario for almost 8 years, working across the entire Northwest region. During that time, she served on secondment with the Justice Team at Nokiiwin Tribal Council for 3 years. She then served in an elected Executive role for the LAO Lawyer's Local of the Society of United Professionals, representing over 160 members in over 65 workplaces across the province. Joy also taught Poverty and the Law and Domestic Violence Law as a Contract Lecturer at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law for a number of years.
Joy holds an International Bachelor of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business, a Juris Doctor from Queen's University, and a Baccalauréat de droit (Civil Law) from the Université de Sherbrooke. She interned with the United Nations, addressing employee appeals and prosecutions. She then articled for the Superior Court in the Northwest region.
Joy’s governance experience includes serving on the Board of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for 8 years and the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario for over 3 years. In her role for LAO, she served on courthouse committees, such as the French Language Services Committee. As a Union Executive, she served on the union’s Audit Committee, as well as the Screening Committee (for election review).
Joy has a long history of youth work in sports and music programming, and mentors law students through Level. Her volunteer work has also included Pro Bono Students Canada and Amnesty International, as well as public speaking and community organizing.
Throughout her career, Joy has had the pleasure of meeting people from all walks of life—including those who make up her community of Thunder Bay—Superior North. It would be her honour to bring her passion and advocacy experience to the table to fight for them in Ottawa. Fair wages, quality health care, and an affordable life in Canada is possible—and Joy is ready to get it done.
